Harvard/Joslin CME Activity: Advance in Diabetes 2008A CME-accredited activity discussing practical aspects and new technologies that address the growing complexity of diabetes care and management and the challenges of managing chronic illness for the primary care provider.

This year's program, Advances in Diabetes 2008, is a comprehensive two-and-one-half-day CME course being developed by Joslin Diabetes Center and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and accredited by Harvard Medical School Department of Continuing Education, an ACCME-accredited provider. Through lectures, workshops, and question-and-answer sessions, faculty will cover advances in treatment of diabetes and associated conditions; specific issues related to diabetes in ethnically diverse populations, in the elderly, and among those with Alzheimer's disease; and practical aspects of managing diabetes and its complications. Physicians who attend all educational events can earn up to 18.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.TM
Learning Objectives
After participating, attendees will better understand the pathophysiology of diabetes and its complications (including obesity), be up to date on recent advances in the treatment of these conditions, and appreciate specific issues and special situations that present clinical challenges in the management of diabetes.
Participants who complete this course will:
Gain insight into recent advances in the understanding of the pathophysiology of type 1 and type 2 diabetes
Learn ways to improve the treatment of their patients with diabetes and its complications (including obesity) by using an interactive keypad system during the presentation/discussion of clinical case scenarios
Appreciate issues/barriers to optimal diabetes management in specific populations, such as ethnic groups, Alzheimer's patients, and the elderly
Review advances in the research related to diabetes treatments that have translated into improved glucose control and quality of life for people living with this condition
